restore from backup mkcd of an IBM RS/6000 of type chrp |
Description
Tip from somewhere on the web some time ago...
Here is a quick workaround to restore a mkcd for an IBM RS/6000 of type chrp:
What's a chrp box? Most of the new IBM boxes are chrp boxes. If you're not sure, you can run:
# bootinfo -p
What's the problem? The firmware that finds the chrp boot image in the CD file system is case sensitive. It's looking for a file name in lower case, and some CD file system creation software creates the names of the files in upper case in the directory structure at the beginning of the file system. If you mount the CD by hand, the names appear in lower case, but the firmware sees them in upper case and can't find the file it's looking for.
With the three versions of software that we tested, we were able to make 2 of them work. Jodian and Youngminds have options to allow creating the lower case letters in the directory structure. We're talking to the owner(s) of the mkisofs command from GNU to see if we can get some kind of flag added to make this work. If that happens, we'll ship a fix to the /usr/samples/oem_cdwriters/mkrr_fs_gnu script, and you will need to get a new copy of mkisofs. So, this is only a problem if you're trying to boot a chrp box AND you're using the GNU software.
What does this mean to me? Well, if you have a chrp machine and are using the GNU software, you'll can still boot and reinstall your system with a mksysb CD, but you'll just have to do a little extra work at install time.
When you boot your chrp box, you usually hear a few beeps and then some music. When you hear the first beeps, hit the F8 key (or the 8 key on a tty). Normally, when you want to boot a chrp machine from a CD, you would hit the F5 key (or 5 on a tty) to boot from the CD automatically. But, because of this bug, you'll hit F8/8 and get a prompt. At the prompt, you will type the following:
boot cdrom:\PPC\CHRP\BOOTFILE.EXE
And, no, I didn't get the slashes backwards. This should boot the system from CD

Example
boot cdrom:\PPC\CHRP\BOOTFILE.EXE |
